The book is written in the first person of several different characters so the story jumps back and forth, sometimes making it a little hard to follow. It begins with an airplane crash with few survivors, one being a stewardess, the first narrator, who had submitted her resignation just before the flight and had packed up her belonging to take with her. This flight was to have taken her to a destination away from her husband and little boy. However, as one of the few survivors, she is able to save several other people by getting them out of the wreckage before it burned. She is a complicated character and her story revolves around her guilt because of her inability to form a relationship with her young son.Her husband, a policeman, another of the narrators, guesses that she had left him when he wakes and finds her closet empty. He is called out to examine the dead body of a young lady the morning of the crash and then is given the job of dealing with the dead girl's father; another of the story's narrators. When the husband hears the plane has crashed, he assumes she has been killed and is almost relieved; but when he arrives at the hospital expecting to hear she is dead, he is shocked to find that she is one of the few survivors. He realizes he is going to have to deal with an injured wife, a bereft father and finding a murderer.Another of the narrators is the daughter of the crashed plane's pilot and she tells the story of the pilot's family, herself, her mother and her brother. At first it is difficult to see how the stories of the all the characters are connected but as secrets are gradually revealed, the lives of the main characters are discovered to be interwoven in a dark way. The rumor circulates that the pilot purposely crashed the plane which devastates the pilot's family and the questions of why he would do that is a major part of the plot. The books certainly keeps one's interest and the answers all come together in a surprise ending. It a good plot and a good read.

This is a well written book with a quirky writing style. I can't say I loved it, because I found it to be very depressing. There honestly wasn't one even slightly happy character in the story. This said, I did find that I wanted to get back to reading it when I was doing other things. The story started out dramatically and each of the characters' story kept me interested. I would not recommend the book to my friends based on the fact that it was overall too depressing, but I guess there is no silver lining in the aftermath of a plane crash. The author did a good job weaving the different characters together, and I did have the murderer figured out way before the end. The end of the story gave way to some hope that the characters would find their way through the tragedy but not enough to make the book one of my favorites. Not sorry I read it, however.

Although I really liked the story line, the writing style was not my cup of tea. Written from the perspective of many different characters, I found the tale difficult to follow since each chapter was either another's person's viewpoint of the same events, or in another place entirely. It took sticking with it and reading more than HALF the book before I could almost figure out who was whom and then even with great difficulty. At one point, I had to read a section twice, came to a conclusion about the characters and then never found out if that was the fact or not. I'm not good with continually skipping around from person to person and place to place, but that's just me. Some readers may enjoy this style, and if you do, then the actual story is a good one to try. It opens with a plane crash, a murder, and the people involved in both....and how they are all somehow connected. I don't know how this book wound up in the Christian section of Amazon's listings, as you will find little faith involvement and a few F-bombs, but pretty tame compared to most.

As indicated in the numerous review descriptions, this is "a dark gripping psychological thriller'. "Thriller" being the least important of the words, in my opinion, I'd attach to this glorious novel. "Gripping"? Absolutely, start to finish. "Psychological"? Oh yes. Four people, four psyches, the connection between the four main characters in this novel is the key substance. You are driven to find out how a plane crash connects these people. The opening chapter is riveting, with one of the four key characters being involved in a horrific plan crash - the reader is glued to the story immediately. But knowing in advance that somewhere along the way throughout this novel her experience will be tied into three other people is what drives you forward - at lightening speed. For me, this novel took me beyond finding out the connection of the four main characters - the backgrounds and current issues about each character will rip your heart out. Be prepared to become very emotionally involved with each and every one of them. There are passages about each one that will leave you breathless, give you pause to close your eyes and just imagine the heartbreak they went through/are going through.I found the sensitivity portrayed of the characters the most important part of the novel.I will interject one little personal comment about Cecilia with regard to what haunts her from her past: Get Over It.Pay close attention as you read this novel. Each chapter deals with one of the four characters and I've come to appreciate this way of writing.I have yet to be disappointed by a debut novel. This one was no exception, Knowing the author's background gave credence to her story. I look forward to future novels by Kavanagh.

It is sort of hard to explain this book . It took me until chapter 24 to realize there was going to be a connection between the cast of characters. The ending was good, and a surprise, but most of it so boring and keeping track of the different people made me feel like I should take notes. Let's put it this way..You know how you hate to dust but are glad you got it done . That's how I felt when I read the last sentence.
